Master of Science in
Global Energy Leadership (STEM)

The goal of the Master of Science in Global Energy Leadership program is to prepare graduates to advance their careers as managers in the energy industry by imparting both the knowledge of the business of energy and exposure to effective management skills.

As the global commercial center for oil and gas production, Houston is the gateway to jobs in the energy industry. Bauer College is home to the Gutierrez Energy Management Institute (GEMI), which provides graduate curriculum in energy management that is now internationally recognized. GEMI partners with the energy industry to

  • Develop and place future leaders with relevant knowledge and experience of the industry
  • Undertake research in business matters of interest to the industry
  • Provide opportunities for industry executives to discuss relevant issues in a neutral setting.

STEM Designation

The MS Global Energy Leadership program is designated as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Advanced Degree.

No other school in Texas offers a Master of Science in Global Energy Leadership.

The curriculum is taught by both full-time faculty and senior executive adjunct faculty. Many courses feature guest speakers to enhance the course content and provide students with different perspectives on important current industry issues.

In addition to energy course, student can complete multi-course certificates in a variety of topics including Energy Value Chain Economics, Energy Finance, Energy Investment Analysis and Energy Risk Management.

Beyond the Course Curriculum

MS-GEL students have the opportunity for significant experiential learning and industry networking. Students participate in consulting projects for energy companies and research projects on leading edge energy topics. Students can also participate in industry symposia and conferences sponsored by Bauer and other UH colleges.

The program is most relevant to those working in, or planning to work, in the following areas:

  • Energy management
  • Energy trading
  • Energy finance
  • Energy project development

The MS-GEL admits students for fall and spring semesters. The students range in age from 22-47 with average work experience of four years.

Requirements

Admission Application

  • Four year undergraduate degree (or foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution
  • Recent GRE or GMAT Score
  • TOEFL for non-native English speakers with undergraduate degrees from non-U.S. educational institutions
  • Personal essay on the fit between the degree and career objectives
